When it comes to physician-assisted suicide, many say it is outlandish and should never be considered an outlet from pain and suffering. Others feel it may be necessary for someone who is suffering from a terminal illness. The Dutch, on the other hand, have requested a law be passed allowing non-ill elderly people to end their lives. The reason behind the radical request is due to elderly individuals saying they are completely fulfilled with the life they have lived and do not wish to continue a meaningless existence. Dutch elders say passing the law would mean they would be able to regain their individuality and lessen the burden of "general fatigue" caused by old age. Although the elders feel having the law would give them the chance to choose when to end their life, many others feel it is a disgrace to God. Critics have said the request to euthanize non-ill individuals is just another way to play God. First there was abortion, then physician-assisted suicide (for terminally-ill individuals), now people want to have a say in when they die although they are not suffering from a terminal illness? The issue is clear, some people just do not have the mental capacity to realize life is unknown. Although one may feel sad or depressed today, there is no telling how one may feel tomorrow. A politician argued the law not be passed because it enables sad and or depressed people to kill themselves in order to end the pain. I wholeheartedly agree with the statement made by the politician. What if someone who was not medically diagnosed with a mental illness were to request the state-assisted death? Of course, nothing has been established regarding the request, but you see my point. If this law were to come up as a possibility in our country, would you support it?
