Journal Entry Instructions
Students will keep a personal journal answering questions based on the text: Christian Reflections on the Leadership Challenge. The purpose of this journal is to encourage students to apply course concepts, practice leadership and management skills, and reflect upon and learn from their experience. Application is a direct “how to” of the concept in your home, workplace, neighborhood, church, or volunteer organization (anywhere you are a formal or informal leader).
Some journal entries might focus on concepts. What are the key concepts you want to remember? What do they mean in the context of your personal or professional lives? What personal and/or organizational problems do they address? What insights do they provide?
Other journal entries should report and critique “real time” progress (successes as well as failures) at “management of organizational behavior.” You might outline action plans for personal improvement and then report on how well you were able to implement them. You might reflect on the effectiveness of other people’s behavior, i.e., friends, supervisors, co-workers, etc. The key to an effective journal is to base your entries on specific experiences and/or observations and then spend your time (and effort) analyzing that experience or observation in light of course concepts, not just describing it.
Each entry should relate to the specific concepts presented in a journal question and then attempt to apply or generalize what you have learned to your current or future positions.
Each journal entry should be about 2 pages in length. Journals will be graded based on 1) your ability to meaningfully express your thoughts and feelings about how module concepts relate to your experience and/or observations, and 2) the amount of insight, understanding, analysis, and application shown in the journal.
Your journal topic for this session: Model the Way
Who are my leadership role models and why do I consider them role models? What values are reflected in the way they lead and live their lives?
How clear am I about the values that guide my life and leadership and how do they impact my life (at home, work, church, volunteer organization, school, etc.)?
Format your journal according to APA Format using Microsoft Word.
