1787- In 1787 the Northwest Ordinance was passed. It helped form new states and regulated them. Subsequently the confederate government had no control. The United States went into a melancholy, farmers had their land taken away, shays rebellion came, and slavery became a topic of debate. This led to the constitutional convention. Many plans were proposed, but only compromises were approved. Two significant compromises were the Great Compromise, along with the three-fifths compromise. The Great Compromise created a two house legislature, and the three-fifths undermine made slaves count because three-fifths of a free man when counting population. Throughout the convention they also agreed that congress couldn't interfere with slavery until 1808. They also rejected George Mason's Bill of Rights. Even though there was no Bill of Rights, nine out of thirteen countries approved the new government. This was a cause of the Civil War, because it started to allow greater slave trade. In addition, it caused many differences to appear between the north and the south eastwest. 1820- The first census of the U.S. showed a population of four million. During the 1800's there were lots of improvements. There were roads, turnpikes, river travel, steamboats, and canals. With these improvements, westward motion grew. In 1820 the U.S.'s inhabitants reached 9.6 million. This is an outcome of the Civil War since it made more nations, which in return made an uneven amount of slave and free states.
