Analytical report is a document describing a thorough study of a particular subject. Before writing an analytical report, you should understand its structure and requirements for compilation. Below we’re going to learn how to write an analytical report in educational establishments.
Analytical report on the professor’s activity should contain a description and analysis of the professional and pedagogical activity of the professor over the last three years. It is the most significant document in terms of the volume.
The difference between the reference and the report is determined solely by the nature of the authorship. Analytical reference is prepared by the applicant or on his or her behalf by other people, while an analytical report is done by the applicant. Accordingly, in the first case, the text is set out in the third person, in the second case the text is set in the first person.
Analytical report is not only the voluminous document, but also the most complex in structure and the most varied in content. Along with a usual text it typically includes various illustrations, charts, graphs, tables, and other elements intended to more clearly and convincingly present the contents and results of the applicant’s activity.
Manuals on how to write an analytical report point that reports should not only present the results of the professional activities of the applicant, but also convincingly demonstrate their significance. It is impossible to achieve that without professional analysis and evaluation of submitted quantitative and qualitative data. Unfortunately, the authors of reports often forget that they’re preparing not regular report, but an analysis report. The abundance of figures, which are not commented, as well as tables, charts and graphs by itself is not really convincing. Sometimes it can lead to an effect diametrically opposite to the expected one. The lack of competent professional explanations and comments of the facts, a clear logic-meaningful connections between different elements of the content of the report, for example, the main text, tables, illustrations, etc. complicates the perception of the report and can be qualified as a consequence of low analytical and reflective culture of the author. It is not enough to just present the results, they should be commented, analyzed, and evaluated.
The other extreme, which is also should be avoided in the preparation of the report, is an abundance of general discussions on various educational topics, allegations, and praises addressed to the applicant as a consequence of the scarcity of specific documented evidence of its professional and pedagogical originality. Analytical report is not a course work or a research work on teaching profession, and not a so-called «generalization of pedagogical experience.» Therefore, lengthy theoretical discourses, detailed descriptions of the pedagogical techniques (methods, forms, and tools) are not welcome in analytical reports. Of course, it is not possible to get around the pedagogical approaches, teaching systems, and the specific techniques a teacher uses in a daily work. It can be enough to just name them, or if necessary, to characterize them briefly, using no more than 10-15 sentences. It is more important to demonstrate a causal link between what approaches a teacher uses and how he or she combines them.
And, the last point of how to write an analytical report an absolute authenticity of the report. Only tested and documented data can be included in the report. The reliability of the report is not just the absence of false or unverified information in it, but also the completeness of the submission of all known and available information describing the content and results of the activities of the applicant in terms of the criteria of the competition.
Structure of an Analytical Report
Contents should be placed immediately after the title page. The function of a table of contents is to provide a general idea of the report structure. Therefore, on the one hand, the table of contents should be sufficiently informative, and on the other hand it should not be too detailed.
The table of contents contains the headlines of all major (significant) sections of the report, including the annexes. The page numbers should be indicated, from which the sections start. The headings must exactly repeat the headlines in the text. It is not recommended to reduce them or give them in another formulation, consistency, and subordination as compared to the headings in the main text.
According to the manual on how to write an analytical report, all titles of contents begin with a capital letter without a point at the end. The last word is connected to hone with the corresponding page number in the right column of the table of contents.
The headings of the same level should be formatted with the same font and placed on the same distance from the left edge of the page. The headings of each successive heading of a lower level are displaced by 3-5 digits to the right relative to the previous higher level titles.
In the manuals on how to write an analytical report, it is said that sections of the report’s introduction, and, consequently, their titles should be formatted according to the same logical reason. If such basis is a direction of the activity, it must be maintained from the beginning to the end of the report.
Analytical reports inform decision makers about a new, exciting, and most likely successful endeavor. For example, you may think that the company that produces processed foods for people could be successful and make profit from producing pet food as well. In order to make this report, you need to make an analysis of how to research the new market and find examples of other companies in similar markets that reached success in the issue. Such examples might influence your path into a new industry.
The aim of reports that solve problems is solving problems. If you have not understood how to write an analytical report yet, use previous examples of similar situations and weigh the options between several solutions. You should make a report where you need to give clear recommendations to a decision-maker based on the research compiled. For example, a business company might be faced with closing down a number of restaurants in a chain, and therefore firing employees, but the boss doesn’t want to fire so many people and leave them without jobs. The report should concentrate on what could the company do?
If your organization or company is about to expand in the near future, you will need to know how to write an analytical report that will analyze the effects (both positive and negative) of this big transformation your company is about to go through. If the big changes have already happened to your organization and there have been repercussions, good or bad, then in order to make a report you will need to use the available data to evaluate the move.
